I always wonder what would be the impact and impression of those discovers 500 hundred years ago, when they step out of the African warm waters into these unspoiled lands with so strong colors and moisture weathers bolds sounds of wildness and beauty.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Portugal, an Iberian kingdom with barely one million inhabitants, was hemmed in by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and by a hostile Castile on the east.

Unable to obtain more land to the east, Portuguese explorers and sailors set out across the Atlantic in the late 1480s in search of a route to Asia.

They were aware of the existence of lands across the Atlantic before Christopher Columbus (1430?-1506) discovered the Antilles in 1492, but they did not divulge their knowledge so as to forestall the ambitions of Spain, England, and France.

In fact S Tomé, had been kept "secret" since it was a start point of many sails to the other side of the ocean – Brasil – several years before its "official discover” after the proposed "innocent" alteration of The Tordesilhas Treaty signed with Spain by the Portuguese King D João II (1494).
The date 21/12/1471 is assumed to be the arrival date of the Portuguese on the island of São Tomé...
