Photographer’s Note
This is the second picture I am posting on my trip to Antarctica. The picture was taken at GPS location 64,41.41S, 63,03.31W, which was in the Gerlache Strait, south of Anvers Island. The landscape was that of Anvers Island and in the distance, Brabant Island.
The picture was taken at 18:14 Chilean day light saving time. The sun was starting to set and casted a long shadow on the landscape. There were about 3 hours of total darkness at night at this latitude.
A polarizing filter was used to take the picture.
The streaks of cloud in the sky created a beautiful background and I waited until our cruise ship passed in front of an iceberg before snapping the picture to give an interesting foreground. Because the pictures were taken from a cruise ship, I obviously had little control over the precise point of view I wanted. The success was in having the camera at the ready all the time and watched out for that fleeting moment.
The yellowish tinge of the snow in the distance was not from the colour of the setting sun. Even in broad day light, the distant landscape always looks yellowish. This, I was told, was due to the angle of the sun at this latitude. I cannot pretend I understand the physics of it all, I will try to research this after I get home.

Hello Conrad,
you can see in this picture how difficult it's for human being to live there. I like the composition of the picture and the contrast between the warmth of the sun and the coldness of the landscape.

Hello Conrad.
Must be a wonderful trip to what should be one of the wonders of the world.
The low light from the end of the day created nice shadows on the mountains contrasting with the light hitting softly.
Cheers.

Hello Conrad,
A clear view of this icy environment, brought in natural colours.
Curious that all the names in your note are from my country Belgium. But de Gerlache was a Belgian explorer, so its easy to guess why.

I am fascinated by this place, so I clicked on the thumbnail. Nice long shadows, panoramic perspective, soothing light, clean colors.
Thanks,

Hello Conrad,
This is a very beautiful picture of icebergs. I like the panoramic format and the composition is very good with this iceberg on the right. Colors are beuatiful too.
