Source of River Ganges Photo

Photographer’s Note

This might be quite a different view of river Ganges (Ganga in Hindi) than most of us are accustomed to on TE. Up here river is still unpolluted by the humans and one gets to experience the beauty of this splendid river in its pristine glory. I took this photo something like 15 km downstream from Gangotri. Gangotri is at the base from where one can trek to Gaumukh.

Gau = Cow, Mukh = Face, so Gumukh basically translates to "Like a Face of a Cow". In reality it is actually a snout of the glacier from where the river Ganga gushes out. It is actually Gaumukh that is called the "source of river ganga". But since I was so closed to the source, I named this photo as such.

This was a really nice place, It was very close to a pretty big army base, but since it was almost winter time, there was no army around and I was not botherd by anyone while taking photos. Photography is strictly prohibited close to the army bases in India.

Hi Sarju,
The scan isn't very good quality but colour of the water is really amazing... Beautiful place and nice composition.
I have just read that You plan to visit this year the country of my dreams - Bhutan! I havn't been able to visit Bhutan this year, but I would like to go to Africa in October.

This picture is of quite poor quality. It's quite dull, blur, and the colors seem to be off tone.

The quality of the picture is of course not a top, but this is interesting to see the Ganges nearly at its source, and therefore worth a post.

I like this photo. No need to be cruel in critiques. this was meant for previous critiq hoooooooooorge. All i did were some tweeks in the photoshop. I thought photo very nice. People should start offering suggestions not just quick comments. Critique and run.

Don't worry about scan quality; it's just a problem of colour setting.
Here you ave too much cyan colour, the opposite of the red.

Good morning Sarju -

A nice image and you are right a much different perspective of the mighty river Ganges. I have often wondered what the source is like. I am sure in your travels post processing is a bit difficult but this image suffers from a very strong color cast that should be corrected. I believe Didi has posted a WS that correct this.

With the on going troubles in Europe I hope you can get back to Canada with your camera equipment in tack. Think about going through the Pacific on the way back.

Hi Sarju,
Looking at your gallery, I see you are following your dreams with your portraits; however, the lure of see the source of the Ganges drew me here. It is a lovely place. The framing looking directly down the river and framed with aspens (?) and a rock wall is wonderful. Like you, I prefer the color-corrected version. You explain the meaning of words and define so clearly the river's source. A glacier for India had not occured to me, but of course there would be mountains. Wishing you health, love & joy, Pat

the quality of the scan is indeed not ideal, but Didi did a nice WS that allows us to understand how cool the original must be. But if we pass on the bad quality, I must say that the story around it is quite interesting. Not really the same color that we're used to when thinking about the Ganges. Thanks for sharing that view with us,

So beautiful! I have seen the River Ganges and made a boat tour at this mighty river, in Varanasi. But this photo is obviously taken far from there. I suppose Ganges starts in the Himalayas, am I right? TFS!
