Photographer’s Note
Russia is an orthodox country - but not because there are Orthodox churches at nearly every corner.
Orthodoxism is in the people's genes.
First of all, some info about the church itself...
This is Church Of Assumption Of Virgin Mary.
This is just next to Red Square... actually, next to a McDonald's ;)
Just walk a bit along one of the lanes away from Tverskaya street - and you are there!
The church was built on 1647 but it was badly destroyed in the war of 1812. Later it was reconstructed in 1857-1860.
In the Workshop you can see an old photo of the church taken approximately in 1881.

-------------------------------------------------
Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) - or "The Moscow Patriarchate" (the latter designation being another official name) - is often said to be the largest of the Eastern Orthodox churches in the world and second only to the Roman Catholic Church among Christian churches, numbering over 135 million members world wide and growing numerically since late 1980s. (Wiki)
-------------------------------------------------
ROC has greatly expanded its activities and influence, especially since 1991 (at least these are my personal observations).
The situation with ROC in Russia reminds me of the story of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court".
For the sake of having dominion over all the country ROC does its best to allure people and change their minds by imposing so-called "optional" and (fortunately, so far only in some selected areas of Russia) "compulsory but made to appear as voluntary" Scripture lessons in both elementary and secondary schools without any alternative for children of other confessions.
Well, perhaps ROC's principle is: if you attend a Russian school, you must be Orthodox. As simple as that.
ROC is in the government, and ROC takes part in every important ceremony/event.
When you go into an Orthodox church you have to pay. Pay, pay, pay for everything (who remembers what Christ said about churches and trade inside churches?).
You pay a lot. The more the better. The more you pay, the quicker you'll get indulgence.
They build more and more new churches to get more and more money. The bigger parish they have, the better. The more fanatic, the better.
They talk about "love for neighbour" but they themselves are full of hatred towards those who are different.
Whatever you may tell me, I see the final result of ROC's activities and extremely active propaganda (especially in the last several years): more and more fanatics - both young and old - whose minds ROC has been trying to change by forcing upon them "the only true religion in the world".
In the past it has always amused me each time I heard the phrase pronounced in the Russian mass media: "Catholic Christmas and Christian Christmas". ;-)) No kidding.
By "Christian Christmas" they meant, of course, Orthodox Christmas which is celebrated 2 weeks later.
Fortunately, now they stopped saying this stupid phrase!
So many well-educated people were sure that Catholics are not Christians! and that the only Christians are Orthodox!
Some 10 years ago one of my students cancelled lessons with me after I told her parents that I am not Orthodox but Lutheran! LOL
They got so scared that they quickly cancelled lessons. They didn't even bother that they had paid me for several lessons in advance. Perhaps they thought that a Lutheran means "cannibal" or something like that?
Mixing with very many people of different social layers, due to my profession, for many years, I have made sure that in most cases Russians are very ignorant about religions - mainly thanks to Russian Orthodox church's propaganda, which, with enviable persistence, never ceases to increase its pressure on people's minds - both directly and - mainly - indirectly.
What do you think actually governs Russia? The answer is simple.
Nowadays various barbarous customs and Orthodox church doctrines, legal nihilism and bureaucrats' rudeness, abysmal ignorance and age-old prejudices, hypocrisy and absolute absence of notions about morality have fancifully and chaotically mixed up in the authorities and ordinary people's brains.
What will we see next?...

dear Elena,
we must have eyes, that can see through the actual and real figures of everything, without any prejudice or dogmatism.
of course it is too difficult, but we must try it at every-when, in everywhere, to everything.
about religions, about politics and about arts(of course photography too), it is severe trial to see through the truth.
when we see this church, not only by its superficial outward, but also by its history, by its meanings of religion, economics, politic, ideal, social and other all elements.
but in my feeling, the essence of every object oozes out from inside to outward.
perhaps the key word is "strangeness", because it seems so strange to my eyes,
the contrast with surroundings, the combination of environment, the figure in time, the place at there and the expression to common people, almost all look strange...
your shot is nice to capture this strangeness just as it is there.
thank you,
Akihisa

Hi Elena,
It is highly interesting to compare this new photo with the WS, nearly 130 years old. The church itself looks very much the same, but the surroundings!!!
The high and modern buildings around here completely destroy the old church. Was there no responsible architect present when these new additions were planned? Your entry here is really important!
Kind regards
Gunnar

hi Elena
A title that means a lot and implies much more. It is scary just reading your notes about Orthodox and the theory behind. But I suppose Russia has its own history and development to claim such characteristics.
The photo itself is most interesting to show a church surrounded by modern day amenities and development, as seen in most places. It is still quite orderly albert amidst commercial centers.
I can see that you have managed very good POV despite the traffic and congestion of space here. Very good brightness and blue to show this lovely scene from your Capital.

Да, Елена,
причем у нас одни ортодоксы постоянно сменяют других. И не видно этому конца. А снимок добрый, такое можно увидеть в любом мегаполисе, старина соседствует с модерном. Удачная пойнт оф вью.

Hi, Elena!
It is very attractive shot. It remembered me Broadway in New York where church was squeezed between skyscrapers. Note is very extensive but all is truly.
Best wishes.

Hi Elena,
One of those beautiful buildings that are squeezed by the city development and increasing traffic in their own tight corner. Good light, dynamic angle.

Hi Elena,
an almost shocking lecture in the Russian way of treating the religions! Reading your note was very interesting and also exciting for me. This impression of the squeezed church is a great illustration of your note. As already mentioned by Gunnar, your entry here is highly appreciated!
Warm regards

Hello Elena,
You have written a strong and interesting note to accompany this photo. Equally interesting is to compare the photo to that from year 1881. Not so much has changed in the church exterior, but the surroundings indeed have changed a lot! You are showing the church from a good POV and have managed to get the whole in the frame in spite of the cars and obvious tight space around. Good management of light, beautiful colours and excellent clarity. A big contrast between old and new. TFS!

Lasse

Hello Elena,
Amazing sharpness in all details, seems like f/8 covers it all!
I notice the fine light rendering natural colours, and the point of view gives a good angle on the building...
Some new, some old in a pleasant blend!

Hello Elena,
Reading your note I could almost imagine that ROC stands for "Russian old communists". It seems that the church has taken over the position of the communist party in society.
The picture is strange and chaotic but reflects, I think, modern Moscow. A bit of chaos is natural in a large city _ I would even welcome it _ but sometimes the effects are really odd. Maybe a bit of planning wouldn't hurt.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Elena
Thanks for explaining the position of the ROC within your country today. I am guessing the apartment building to the left was built within the USSR era with no respect shown towards this ornate architecture. AT least it wasn't destroyed. I do wonder why in your country with its enormous landmass does everything have to be squeezed close together. I was able with your map inclusion to position this church - not quite next door to Red Square but close! Another good photo of daily life in the streets of Moscow - this time on a sunny day. Hello Elena. Indeed a worthseeing motive of full contrasts. The next to each other of different structural style elements seems to be normal however here. Your text to this photo is very interesting. Altogether ideal a photo for TE. Regards, Wolfgang.

Zdravstvuy Elena. No more communism but McDonalism and Capitalism. What a collage of styles and functions. It almost feels that the church is being besieged by satellite dishes, banking and fast foods. But not to worry-Orthodoxism is in the people's genes.Anyway, great light and interesting details. Regards. Klaudio.
