Photographer’s Note
A few people expressed surprise at seeing the old buildings in Kampong Glam, where Arab Street is situated, and expressed the hope that these buildings will survive. I think that they will, as Singapore's planners are ensuring that certain quarters are renovated and made viable. As you can see, the silk, batik and carpet merchants are cheek to jowl in Arab Street, competing to sell their goods. It and the streets nearby are busy and also popular for their Middle Eastern restaurants.
I had some fun trying to capture the mood of a rainy day, whilst ensuring that neither I nor my camera get wet.

Hi Klaudio,
I remember the first time I went to Singapore in 1972 pretty well the whole town looked like this, it was a wild place before Uncle Harry cleaned it up.
You have certainly captured the atmosphere of the old precinct really well, for me the rain adds a lot to the feeling one gets in that part of town.
Superbly sharp with good composition and POV.

Hello Klaudio,
in my opinion, such captures show the essence of life in any place!
I seem to have walked along this street when I was in Singapore :) But on that day, fortunately, it was not raining! it was one of those few days when the sun was shining - although through the clouds.
I like this man walking with an umbrella, and the reflections on the wet pavement! this shot refreshes my old memories, which is very nice :) I want to go to Singapore again in the future.
Warm greetings from sunny Moscow,
Elena

Hello Klaudio
I wonder you were shooting from a covered five-foot-way or with an umbrella. It can be pretty hard with the later. Anyway, this turns out really clear and sharp with good positioning of the umbrella man who helps to accentuate the rainy mood. The great thing with this kind of weather is that you dont get harsh shadows especially under the roof eaves and at the 5-foot-way. You still owe me the picture of the lady at the Cultural Village!
Good work.

Alfred
p/s Is my tripod mounting piece still with you? I almost forgot about it until last night when I took it out, getting ready for my next trip to the Swine Flu infested Melbourne. Hope you and family are ok.

Hello Klaudio,
In spite of rain you have managed to shoot a colourful, contrasty and sharp photo of this interesting street. A good composition with many details to take in. A good daily life shot. Well done - TFS!
