Photographer’s Note

So ! Difficult to leave for good from here... Still some ties left... Maybe a last one for now ?

But nowadays as announced previously, posting many more photos and impressions on Flickr, quantity (all regarding infos about travels, personal diary) being as important - if not more for me, than esthetics or pure quality...

NB, I just started - still busy with the 3rd day = only 1st full day in Havana, hundreds of other photos to see again and my head will explode if I won't go more slowly !

Best regards to all of you, I'll see your photos but only more slowly...

The story : just around the corner from my lodging, I had this vision in the rain : an old car about to leave, blowing the horn impatiently, someone running out of that gate, rushing into the car while the 2 girls were making lots of gestures to the passengers (rather daring and defiant gestures, a bit obscene as if these were friends, they were laughing too).

... But it lasted just for an instant, I had no time to take more distance to capture the whole scene and one second later, the car was already gone with lots of old noises into the tropical night.

j'aime, j'adore même ... belle scène nocturne mais surtout ce n&b est absolument exquis. Juste un peu dommage que l'homme soit coupé, peut-être qu'une coupe pour l'enlever aurait pu etre faite ? Qu'importe, l'ambiance est magnifique.

Hi Catherine.
Good choice the B&W,the play of lights and shades is perfect, and all the lines crossing the picture in black and white..,really good. I like too the depth here,looking through the door it seems like those russian dolls, one inside another...I think a little noise could work well in this picture.

the environment, people, car, and night setting makes this
amazing shot of yours so atmospheric... it seems to be taken
out from a classical movie back in time. frame, light and
shadows are so cool ;)

Excellente ambiance, Catherine.
J'aime beaucoup ce côté mystérieux et ancien de la rue.
Malheureusement, je ne peux pas te donner de bonhomme à cause d'un problème sur TE : suite à un incident technique, la plupart de membres ne peuvent pas poster ni donner de points depuis ce matin, et l'administration n'a pas donné d'explications. Tu fais partie des chanceux qui ont pu poster mais peu de personnes pourront de faire des sourires verts ;))).

j'adore!!!! La lumière poussée par cette voiture construite il y a des dizaines d'années est superbe!
La texture sur les mur est hallucinante! C'est vraiment étonnant étant donnée la noirceur.
La scène sort tout droit d'un film.

J'adore J'adore! Je tombe rarement en amour avec une photo...mais celle-ci est vraiment spéciale.

ESt-ce que tu t'es posé la question si tu devais couper l'homme à droite? Je crois que je le ferais. Peut-être même que tant qu'à couper l'homme, tu pourrais couper la lumière en haut. On verrait qu'il y a une source de lumière, mais ça te permettrait d'éliminer toute cette zone en haut que tu dois garder car tu ne veux pas que la lumière soit en haut complètement...Je réfléchi tout haut...

Flickr, TE, les deux sont tellement différents. Je crois qu'ils se complémentent. En tout cas, moi ça me convient d'être moins actif aux deux, mais de participer aux deux...Je prend juste ce que je veux des 2 sites.

Ca me fait très plaisir de te voir, malgré ta désertion:-). Je te comprends en grande partie, bien que ne me sentant pas attirée par flickr, je continue plutôt sur PH. Cela ne m'empêche pas de regarder.
La photo maintenant : superbe ambiance, comme on l'imagine, il y a quelque chose d'intemporel ici, de cinématographique, c'est fort, les jeux d'ombres et de lumière réjouissent le regard. Le b/w est magnifique, bien dense. Je ne couperais pas le bonhomme à droite, mais peut-être que je clonerais cette lumière en haut qui attire le regard sans être utile. (un petit peu trop de sharp, sur mon écran, du côté des personnages), faut bien que je fasse la difficile de temps en temps:-).

Cath! Such a long time without see you around! What a photo, it has such a film-noir atmosphere, and at the same time we can appreciate the decandence mood of the wonderful city of La Habana. The sharpness considering the light conditions is exceptional and it seems you dont used a tripod. Congratulations for this and for the all photo.

Nice to see you back, even if it will be more rarely. This one is really like straight from a film noire of the 1950's: the run-down area, the light from the old car, the spooky old house, the strange people standing in the doorway. I like how you have cropped the picture to the right to make the man almost step out of the frame.

Image évidemment cinématographique, mais de quel film ? Lumière expressionniste, voiture de années 50, "actrices" d'aujourd'hui, noir et blanc daté et intemporel ...
Chacun voyage dans le film qu'il se reconstitue et qui, parfois, croise le réel.

Hi Catherine, for a "grab shot" this is quite simply amazing. The elements are all so well positioned you could not have done better if you had asked them to stand there yourself. So much interest, what lies behind that open doorway is a feast in itself. The way the headlights are illuminating the two girls is delightful. One could look at this image for hours and not get bored.

Stunning - the only word for it!

Hot, dark and wet - that is what tropics consists of in my imagination. Sometime ago I read a lot of books and worked up the idea out of them :))
And your photo perfectly fits to the scheme. With addition of some action out of a thriller or alike... ;)) Fabulous.

I was happy to see you're back just until read your note... So you will be another great photographer transferred to another photograhy site... Anyway it promises hope to see "some ties left"... A tie is always a tie, and hard to break...
About the photo, kind of which I am in love nowadays. Darkness, hard contrast, bright lights... Story behind it and more deep stories to build up with the info in your note.

The fonts of the size 1.5 !!!
No wonder there are (almost) no notes - no texts - no verbal critiques - no chats...
Who has the nerves and times ( and eyes ?) to sit there and trying to read those diabolical, miniature fonts in there...?
That's WHY the site is flooded with those substitute stamps and markers - instead of the words !
There is one site you can talk loudly to the world... The TE...!!!
With all of its flaws and imperfections...

Hi Cath--I'm hoping you reconsider leaving from here! You'll be missed. You certainly don't sacrifice quality to get the quantity you want. As in this shot, for example...the tones and textures are wonderful. The car is old, the wall is old and worn, the light is fragile and barely adequate, as if it could go out at any moment. Just a beautifully photographed scene, overall. (Maybe ideally you wouldn't cut off the guy on the right, but it's too minor to bother about.)

What name are you under on flickr? And do you really ever get extended constructive comments anywhere outside TE? Flickr comments seem to be mostly "Great shot!" or the equivalent. Regards, Ken.

Tu entres par la grande porte dans le domain de l'expression artistique en photographie. Le jeu de la lumiere est bien present dans cette image et tu nous laisses imaginer les couleurs de ce coin dans le pays exotique. Tres content d'avoir vu ton souvenir visuel de Cuba et je suis persuade qu'il y en a encore dans tes poches.

J'ai vu plusieurs de tes photos de Cuba sur Flickr. Bien oui, j'ai fait ça discrètement, sans laisser de traces. Tu sais combien je suis incapable, pour mon plus grand regret, d'écrire seulement quelque chose du style "wow!". Alors, je n'ai rien écrit. Mais, il y a beaucoup de photos digne d'intérêt. J'avais vu celle-ci lorsque tu l'avais publiée dans Flickr. Et je l'avais aimée. Et je l'aime toujours! ;) Tu sais ce qui me frappe le plus dans cette photo? Ce sont les phares allumés de la voiture. C'est peut-être étrange à dire, mais ça donne l'impression que cette automobile a une vie bien à elle. Bon, j'ai sans doute vu trop de films d'animation! :))
"Cropper ou ne pas cropper?" voilà la question. Ben voilà, je n'en ai aucune idée! :)
J'aime l'ambiance de nuit. D'ailleurs, j'aime de plus en plus la photo de nuit. Et pourtant, ce n'est sûrement pas l'idéal en photographie! Si tu as quelques minutes, j'aimerais que tu me dises quelle est ton expérience avec ton Lumix. As-tu aussi utilisé ton G10?

This is incredibly cinematic... The street lights, the shadows on the wall, the large front door from where the girls show up... wow... and all sprinkled with an absolutely wonderful B&W to provide even more mystery to the image... Love it!
