The ship comes!
-Moods from Europe- I.

The district, which is sometimes referred to as „Little Amsterdam” because of its many canals, can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by hopping aboard a waterbus. Built in the first half of the 17th century by Christianshavn was originally intended both as a fortified city and a naval base. The area was the site of the first boatyards established in Copenhagen, as well as the warehouses belonging to major shipping lines. Its is also where most sailors and boatyard workers lived. Until recently Christianshavn was known only as the site of the „free state of Christiania” and was considered to be unattractive, poor and neglected. Lately, however Christianshavn, together with nearby Holmen, has blossomed thanks to a sustained programme of urban redevelopment. Former run-down warehouses have been transformed into trendy restaurants, cafés, company offices and smart apartments, which are favoured by artists and young professioanals.
