‘Náfplio (Ναύπλιο) - evening in Náfplio’

Náfplio, a very beautiful town in the Peloponnese, was the first capital of modern Greece (only 5 years from 1829 to 1834).

On the picture you see the central square Platia Syndágmatos with the Palamidi castle on the background.

On the top of a 215-metre high rock the Venetians build this fortress after they retook the city in 1685 from the Ottomans.
This fortress was the last major construction of the Venetian empire overseas.

After having climbed 857 steps (to the top of the fortress there are more than 1.000 !) you can enjoy an impressive view over the old town of Nafplion and the Argolic Gulf.
Lots of pictures with this view have already been posted on TE (by other members).

I have been considering to post a photo here of this nightview on the square on which I have cropped the lamps at the left side. I didn’t because I felt the composition wasn’t right anymore.

Ciao Paul,
ottima gestione delle luci in questo notturno.
L'inserimento dei rami dell'albero in alto, aumenta piacevolmente la composizione.
Vedo però un pò di distorsione prospettica, che avrei cercato di correggere.
Un buon software per risolvere questi problemi è: "Picture Windows Pro 3.5"

Very interesting to see this square and open space, and it will be here to sit down, order good food and drinks and relax.

Without the lamp and light or the tree at the top, it looks empty, so I think you made a good choice, IMO.

I like the blue hour view and you have done a good job at 1/1.25s exposure for f/2.8.

Hi Paul,
I have been there some time ago but I don't remember much and I was not taking pictures at that time so thanks for sharing and reminding me the place. Very beautiful composition, although that lamp is really damaging the shot. I get it very often in the night or blue hour shots. Sometimes it is hard to predict and avoid. It is still pretty and I believe of a sentimental value for you. The square is very romantic... Sky color is fantastic. This is the best time also for a romantic walk.

Dag Paul,

Zeker geen gemakkelijke foto om te nemen, de kleuren zijn zeer sterk, de zon laat zich een klein beetje zien aan de zijkant, zelf de plein verlichting is zeer sterk, maar darentegen vind ik deze foto zeker aantrekkelijk.

Excellent nightshot, perfect timing for the "blue" hour, great light managment and excellent framing and composition (except the light on the left side, maybe you should crop it, it's a little bit disturbing). Hello Paul,

The great German physicist (and Nobel Laureate) once said, "Never underestimate how much pleasure it gives a man to see/hear what he already knows." I know the site of this beautiful photograph, having visited Navplion 2-3 times on cruises. The first time was in 1992, when I took my son, then a university rower, on a cruise. When we got to Navplion, he was in such great condition that he ran to the castle at the top, and I went up panting, arriving at the top 10 minutes after him.

The light management is first rate as is the composition. The note complements the image perfectly.

It is a very attractive and agreeable square, in a magnificent capture at the blue hour.
I like the graphical effect of the branches hanging in the top of the frame, illuminated well by the lamppost in a beautiful light explosion.

This is a great blue hour shot! The deep blue sky provides nice contrast for the nicely lit buildings and fortress. The colors are great as is the sharpness and detail. The overhanging tree provides nice framing for the shot.

Hello Paul,
you did the right thing that you did not crop the bright lamps on the left: they balance perfectly the bright light which is on the right! A good photo is, first of all, a good composition ;) I like the way you used a tree branck to cover part of the empty dark-blue evening sky.

Hi Paul,
Beautiful blue hour, with outstanding colours and a well though compo. The inevitable OE in the brighter parts doesn't disturb much and one of the the things that makes it more special is that shining white floor.

Hello Paul, Fantastic blue hour scene, you have also made good use of the hanging branch to frame it. Lovely colours, especially the blue sky & the glittering leaves on the branch in FG. Good management of light, I think the only blemish is the bright spot on the left, I agree with you on the cropping, maybe cloning might have worked, anyway a very impressive image, with excellent colour & light.

Hi Paul. Wonderful view of that place. Great colors and light well managed. Also the frame with the tree in the upper side looks great. I was going to comment on your 111th photo, but was atracted by the name 'Napfio' and remember a guy from whom I learned a lot in TE (I hope) that has too lots of great photos from that place and goes by the name of steliosk.
