Photographer’s Note

Bleskensgraaf is really called Bleskensgraaf and Hofwegen. They were combined in 1855. The village forms part of the municipality of Graafstroom, which includes also Goudriaan, Molenaarsgraaf, Brandwijk, Ottoland, Oud-Alblas and Wijngaarden. Apart from a number of old farms and a flourmill, Bleskensgraaf does not have many monuments.

The village lies in the middle of the polder landscape of the Alblasserwaard, on the small bog river Alblas. There is the Natuurpad [Nature trail] Bleskensgraaf, which also passes along the hamlet of De Donk, which lies on a seven-metre high hill. A ‘donk’ is a type of sand dune which originated in the ice age. Some protrude above the peat and clay ground. Bleskensgraaf also lies on the signposted ‘Molenroute’ [Windmill route] for cyclists.

When you have a chance to look in de neighbourhood, take your camera with you, and shoot your photos from a beautiful surroundings. Kinderdijk is just 8 km away.

Een mooie plaat van een plekje dat je onder andere weersomstandigheden ook al eens op TE hebt gezet.

Goed idee om het water een prominente plek te geven: de wwerspiegeling komt zo goed tot zijn recht. Het huis helemaal links en de molen rechts bakent het wijdse landschap goed af.

veel "Hollandser" kan het inderdaad niet, een kanaal, een dijk, een typische woning en uiteraard een windmolen. Heel mooie warme kleuren voor deze mooie compositie (hoewel ik hem liever nog wat ruimer gekadreerd had gezien). Het zijn toch weer de schitterende reflecties die dit een prachtfoto maken. Alvast een fijne kerst- en eindejaarsperiode toegewenst. TFS

Oui oui Jaap,
typiquement 'hollandaise' cette scène dont tu as le 'chic' pour les photographier, tu es en quelques sortes, l'ambassadeur de cette région de l'Europe.
Bien des ingrédients de réussite ici, tels le rendu des couleurs et des lumières, mais aussi le cadrage avec la part belle laissée aux reflets.

Hi Jaap,
I'm on a short trip here at TE - looking for a shot from Phetchaburi/Thailand - and I thought why not visiting my old friend Jaap ... and to see what shots he made during the last year.
Woooow - I'm so amazed to see them all - so wonderful, full of dutch atmosphere - this one is fantastic, I like it so much.
Thanks, I promiss to look more often what you are doing on TE. Perhaps you also will post again on TN?

Dag Jaap. Inderdaad Hollandser kan haast niet (misschien nog een paar klompen en een bol kaas?). Je hebt van dit plaatsje echt al een schitterende verzameling opgebouwd. Een prachtig beeld. Als ik ooit eens in de buurt ben, zal ik die molenroute wel indachtig zijn ;-)). Groetjes.

Hello, Jaap -

This may be "typical Dutch," but it is very well done. You have definitely achieved a "painterly" effect here. And it's interesting the way neither of the two main elements are in the classic "rule of thirds" position, and how the horizon splits the image in equal halves. This just proves that rules are meant to be broken.

There's nothing typical about this shot, Jaap. You do the best landscapes from the Netherlands on here. The light is always phenomenal, marvelous color, perfect compositions and this one is awesome. I love those wonderful reflections and the way the light catches the grass in the lower right corner. Absolutely beautiful. Many thanks and many wishes for a great New Year!

What is it about the light in your neck of the woods? It is always so beautiful and this image is no exception. The typical building and windmill are frontlit and stand out so well in their surroundings. Also the reflections are superb.
