Photographer’s Note

Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating.
The Alblasserwaard tour starts in the town of Kinderdijk, a tourist mecca famous for its windmills. (Molentocht means windmill tour.) The Krimpenerwaard is one of the oldest polders in Holland, dotted with ancient villages, and you can skate through nine of them in a day. (Negendorpentocht means Nine Villages Tour.) You can read about the area's history in this Krimpenerwaard site.

Aside from the scenery, the joys of Dutch skating are the companionship of other skaters, and the delicious food served up along the canals. With so many skaters on the ice, you're guaranteed to find someone who skates at your speed, and gets hungry or thirsty with the same regularity.

For someone who has never seen snow or winter, it is possible that they would not believe people skating on the canal and river. But here it is, you show this shot of the skaters in action on the canal right behind the row of trees and houses. The presence of a boat indicates the canal. With the warm diagonal light, you captured the scenery very well here.

This charming scene reminds me of a lovely book I read as a child, about a boy in Holland who wanted to learn to skate... It sounds like a great winter pastime and this scene, with the yellow boat and the skater in red is really wonderful. Excellent lighting, top frost conditions and interesting note.

Is it safe?! We've had people falling through ice and dire warnings on the news. It certainly makes a stunning image. As usual you have made great use of perspective. Just by looking at the number of people in the frame we have to admit that the practice is very popular. However, I am wondering how thick the ice can be in those occasions. Around the boat it appears that there no ice at all. The capture of that person in full light is superb and creates an extraordinary eye catch. By the way, the entire composition is superb. Well done.

Goede morgen Jaap,

Dit is een hele mooie, echt een van de betere winter plaatjes die ik hier gezien heb de afgelopen week. Fris, kleurrijk en bovendien met een perfecte belichting. Bootje en de dame in de rode jas doet het hem net. Dat wist jij, dus je zal wel net zolang gewacht hebben totdat ze precies daar was waar je haar wilde hebben. Wij hebben hier in het noorden slechts een beetje vorst gehad, niks geen sneeuw, niks geen rijp aan de bomen, dus dit zo zien maakt me jaloers.
Echt een mooie plaat.

De koude deze dagen is een geschenk met name voor de jongeren.
Ongelooflijk als de rivier van ijs dat gebruikt om zich te amuseren. Ik weet niet of dit normaal is of er iets speciaals.

Zoals ik reeds gemeld heb, krijgen we hier een schitterend winterbeeld.
U heeft ook mooi het bootje meegenomen, maar de schaatser, niet veel in aantal, maar wel zeer dynamisch voor dit beeld.

A superb capture of these ice skaters making best use of the recent very cold temperatures. I like the diagonal perspective and the presence of the boat fast in the ice, which contrast perfectly with the evident dynamism of the skaters. I think that here the ice is sufficiently thick to slip there, not as on the "Grand Canal" in Versailles where some people are risky there !!! Hoi Jaap,

En zelfs de -20 graden nog gehaald. Dat is niet vaak dat we het zo koud hebben! Ik moet zeggen dat ik er niet echt warm van word, maar afgelopen zondag ben ik dan toch maar voor de eerste (en waarschijnlijk laatste) keer op natuurijs wezen schaatsen.
Het was me wel een beetje een knollenveld dat ijs, maar dat komt omdat er hier in het zuiden sneeuw op het ijs heeft gelegen en dat maakt het niet echt gladder. ;-)

Het kon natuurlijk niet anders dan dat jij, als specialist van het Holland landschap, ons na deze winterperiode verwent met zo’n prachtig typisch Holland winterlandschap waar Hendrick Avercamp nog jaloers op zou worden.

Une composition toujours aussi belle et très aboutie.
Pas facile de faire une critique négative sur une image qui fait 200 points mais, comme tu nous a habitué à être très exigeant, j'aurais cadré légèrement sur la droite pour ne pas voir ce morceau de route sur la gauche.

It's also great pleasure for us watching your extraordinary photo.

Famous canal almost converted to an ice street while visitors enjoying their time on it. Effect of low angled lights are fantastic, especially on boat and as long shadows on frozen canal. The color of boat, red wore skier, frozen trees are just speechless as same the clarity and capture quality of your frame. Congratulations.

I'm very eager to play here on the ice and this absorbs me amazingly !
the elements of the photo are great,and your angle and POV are perfect.first the boat,it's excellent,then the person in red cover,then the light and shadow in all path of the river- ice road,all are mixed in a fine frame that composed perfectlly.
I enjoy it very much.

splendid snapshot with the people to enjoy to making skating on the frozen surface of the water canal.But the most effective from the whole scene, is the the lonely fasten boat with ropes in the edge of the bank.Well done.

Hi Jaap. I was reading only a few days ago that this was the first time in 12 years that the canals had frozen over and how the Dutch people had taken to their skates en masse. You have captured that beautifully in this technically perfect photograph. I guess you waited until the skater in the red jacket was in just the right position to take this shot to add a splah of colour - so perfect timing too. Cheers . . . David

Absolutely spectacular, my friend. I love the subject — the skaters on the canal, the bright orange boat as a strong focal point, the sharp resolution... I will immediately import this to my gallery of favorites. The skater with the red coat serves as a secondary focal point, evocative of a chop mark on a Chinese painting. Bravo!

Très bon équilibre ombres/lumières, je suppose que tu utilise la méthode HDR, si tel est le cas je constate que la qualité est excellente et non excessive.

Olá Jaap, I remember well this one from yesterday and it doesn't surpsrise me at all the big success here. Also I think that the visual impact is bigger than in Flickr. That boat is a delightful sight gaining so much importance as your windmills or castles. Besides that you made a great inclusion of the red coat passing by. Interesting and surprising photo you have here.There is color contrast and some luminosity contrast,not very much,so the photo has a bit of "dreamy" look which I love.
Great composition,except for the branch in the upper right corner of the photo.

Jaap, it seems to me that the interests are well balanced in Netherland. While some enjoy the skating others enjoy the walking and photographing and finally some dream of summer when the ice is gone and sailing is a possibility. Great light and the opportune moment to wait for the skater in his red jacket to provide the right contrast.
