Orange boat Photo | TrekEarth

Photographer’s Note

Western border of the Alblasserwaard in 1866. Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht and Dordrecht are west of the area, on the other side of the Noord river. Alblasserdam and Papendrecht are in the Alblasserwaard.
The first human inhabitants of the Alblasserwaard settled there after the last Ice Age, around 10.000 years ago. The ice had not reached the area itself, but Eolian deposits created high points in the wet environment. These high points were places where hunter-gatherers settled, as archaeological investigations in the area have shown.
During the Middle Ages several canals and dikes were created to reclaim the land, with the last part being en diked in the second half of the 14th century. Yet numerous floods continued to happen throughout the history of the area, as it is bound by rivers on all sides.
During World War II the Bombing of Rotterdam also damaged the Alblasserwaard, when both the village center of Alblasserdam and a part of Papendrecht were hit by German bombs.

This is a village I photograph before. But this one was another day, another angle, and again, another great light and now in winter I hope you like this version from this place. This one I took with a mono pod.

Jaap,
my last critique had also a boat but that one was stuck in the ice. Now this one here floats freely in a wonderful landscape with that special light that gets its enhancement through the dark background provided by the clouds that brought certainly some heavy rain. Well composed as usually!

Zonder bootje was het dan ook amper iets geweest, maar nu trekt hij flink de aandacht en de hele foto is dan ook daarop gebasseerd. Mooie uitsnede, fraai aan de compositie...

En hier is de oranje boot weer. Heel mooie compositie. Voldoende ruimte tussen de boot en de weerspiegelingen van de huizen. Heel mooi omkaderd met links een boom en zijn weerspiegeling en rechts een andere boom en de steiger. Ondanks het winterseizoen en dankzij het prachtige licht heeft de foto vele en mooie kleuren.

You are the master of dramatic lighting, and this is a great example of that. The sunlight on the boat and houses make them stand out very well, while the sky in the background is much darker. Very dramatic!

The winter sun, the dark clouds and the reflections in the river are often elements we see in your work, but you always make each one refreshingly different. Interestingly, the colour of the boat is picked out by the roof of one of the houses, giving some additional balance to the image.

L'avantage d'habiter à proximité d'un te lieu donne l'opportunuité de choisir différents moments en fonction de la variation de luminosité en toutes saisons.
La pratique du HDR n'est pas excessive et ceci permet de compenser les différences de lumières que l'appareil ne peut discerner comme l'oeil humain.

Dag Jaap. Het moet prachtig zijn om daar aan het water te wonen. Deze foto heeft ook weer alles dat ze moet hebben: de boot op de voorgrond, het water, een mooie reflectie, kleur en een mooi wolkenspel. Als jij dan nog aan de andere kant van de camera staat, dan kan dat maar één ding betekenen: een schitterend resultaat. De manier waarop jij de laatste tijd foto's brengt is bijna te mooi om waar te zijn. Bestaan die plaatsen dan echt? In ieder geval, je maakt schitterende reclame voor je streek.

Not very often I see a brown boat :) and you have a good eye to spot this nice location for selecting your POV to show the reflection of the houses while at the same time, frame all there is along this river with a good bright light to make it work very well. Great work.

You have a knack for capturing wonderful light! This is no exception!
The warm colors are contrasted nicely by the dark clouds. The angle of the shot works well giving the scene a nice sense of direction and depth. The reflection is great providing nice depth and balance for the shot. The photo is crisp and clear with great DOF.

Hola Jaap,
Prachtige kleuren in deze vastleggen in het late voorjaar. Ik ben dol op die boot die uitnodigt een wandeling door het kanaal, en bewonder al zijn wonderen. Uitstekende samenstelling en prachtige plek.
Ik zal een map op mijn computer en ik zal opslaan van al uw foto's in it, ik mag je graag!

Boats are my passion and I can see Holland is a country full of boats! You have invented the yacht and you still produce excellent boats. (Actually my boat is made by a Duch shipyard).
So for me this sight has a double pleasure: for the beautiful composition, village architecture and warm colours, and for the presence of this appealing orange boat. The golden light and the splendid reflections contrast wonderfully with the dark sky. A very fine atmosphere.

I must confess that I often feel reluctant to give away smileys to pictures that have already received hugh amounts of praise. Every so often the number of points say more about the member's capacity to make friends on TE than his/her photographic and artistic skills.
You belong to that handful that really deserve all the praise you get. This picture is typical: a carefully chosen POV, perfect sharpness and exposure, a meticulous care with details - a truly artistic eye.

Truly fantastic photograph especially your POV and attention to details you've given.
Everything possible I wanted to say has already been said, except a thought that came to my mind.

Although with the limited skills that I have, I have no suggestion to improvise this shot, for I wouldn't have been half as good as this, however I always feel a scenery with a Boat would be good in a warm Sepia tone which I've tried doing on this image as well. I've posted that as workshop, please put in your thoughts... :)
