Photographer’s Note
Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating.
The Alblasserwaard tour starts in the town of Kinderdijk, a tourist mecca famous for its windmills. (Molentocht means windmill tour.) The Krimpenerwaard is one of the oldest polders in Holland, dotted with ancient villages, and you can skate through nine of them in a day. (Negendorpentocht means Nine Villages Tour.) You can read about the area's history in this Krimpenerwaard site.
Aside from the scenery, the joys of Dutch skating are the companionship of other skaters, and the delicious food served up along the canals. With so many skaters on the ice, you're guaranteed to find someone who skates at your speed, and gets hungry or thirsty with the same regularity.
I hope you like this shot. well I have enjoy myself with making photo's that day.

Dag, Jaap. Zeer mooi.
Prettige avond verder,

Hey Jaap,
Nice composition of the skaters and the windmill! The colors of the sunset are warm and add a lot to the atmosphere of this shot. Good use of perspective toward the windmill to develop a very effective and interesting frame...
I've found the luminescence to be a little bit lower than I would like so I've uploaded a WS - Hope you like it!

Hello Jaap,
Your title is perfect for the shot.
It reminds me of paintings that I have seen from Dutch artists.
The pov following the gentle curve of the canal, and the off-centre positioning of the windmill, are masterful.
The people add interest and dynamism.
I like the low light, creating long, long shadows and just lifting the frosty grass.
I don't think this would have worked nearly so well with a blue sky. The sombreness helps to maintain the atmosphere of 'chill'.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

This is one of the prettiest winter shots I've seen. I love that light (which you are the master of) and those cold wintry colors. The frosted grasses are wonderful in the FG and I like the mistiness in the distance. The canal leads in nicely and the windmill is perfectly placed in your composition. I can surely see how you might have truly enjoyed the day. It's wonderful! Many thanks and warm regards,

A photo in the tradition of your great painter!
The light is so peculiar probably due to the haze in the air, but it creates a fine effect and atmosphere, very much like a painting. This canal transformed into a highway for skaters is really a very interesting and unusual view, but the real beauty of the photo is the windmill and the canes.

Goedemiddag Jaap,
Uitstekend fotowerk, bedankt!
Groeten,

Hello Jaap,
this is one of the most attractive winter shots I have ever seen. The light is perfect. You have chosen a fantastic POV to create the atmosphere of a Breughel-painting. There is only this flickering ribbon closing off the scene that is irritating. Nevertheless it is great photo work. TFS!
Warm regards

Good evening dear friend Jaap,
For your picture "Traditional ice skating" I said it was a Broegel mirror, but most of your pictures are the real Broegel famous Duch artist. Your artistic expression is without limits. I stay big fun of your work. So proud of your visits.

Bonjour mon ami,
Daniel.

Hi Jaap,
Let me see if I am the one putting this beauty above 200 points. :D
The resemblance with a Dutch classic painting is really amazing! That strangely beautiful light, the absolutely neat compo, the presence of the inevitable windmill... A great job in every sense!

Jaap,
Another really beautiful painting like photo. We do like the natural weather that allow us to do thing differently, I saw some photo of people skiing and playing with snow in London this year, they seem thrills. I would love to see it snow in LA :) it does snow in the mountain in Sothern California. Beautiful shot overall, but I will be a little picky today, I would have like the see the windmill on the left facing in the photo for a better composition, and the red and white plastic rope is a little distracting. Otherwise, I like the mood, the soft pale sunlight just enough to illuminated the atmospher beautifully. Thanks.

Hi Jaap,
Great shot. I like the action here. People skate on river or canal. You can't ski in Holland, but you can at least skate. I hope there are no drowning accident there.
cheers

With this kind of scenery it is no wonder that Holland has been the home to so many masters.
This, as you know Jaap is a fantastic shot, all the technicals are perfect but somehow you have managed to capture a feeling. Well done to a new master from Holland.

Hallo Jaap, zonder de rood/wit lint zou dit inderdaad een schilderij kunnen zijn van de oude meesters. Heel mooi gedaan hoe je the sfeer hebt vast weten te leggen

Jaap,
This is an amazing winter scene. Your composition is great using the frozen canal to lead the eye into the scene. The off center placement of the windmill works well giving the scene a nice sense of direction. The lighting is great bringing out good details and colors.

Hello Jaap,
It's hard to add anything to the more than one hundred comments you have already received. I agree with all those remarks about perfect light, softly saturated colours and resemblences with traditional Dutch paintings.
Kind regards,

Greetings Jaap,
Wow, this really is a wonderland painting! What a neat experience that must have been. Your photo is technically excellent as well. I absolutely love the light streaming in from the right side of the frame. By contrast, the horizon and sky appear pretty dark, like nighttime is quickly approaching or dawn just recently broke.
Your composition leads the eye from the foreground rushes out onto the ice to join the skaters, and then over to the windmill who is keeping watch on the other side.
Masterfully done.
Warm Regards from California (where we NEVER get natural ice!),
Rachel

Hi Jaap,
You are right, it really looks like a painting! The windmill is perfect there, identifying the Netherlands. All those people skating... What a beautiful view!
Your note is very pleasant to read and made me learn something I ignored completely. I thought natural ice in the Netherlands was not a rare occurrence.
Thanks for sharing,

Please Jaap, take this as a friendly comment, but what were you thinking, leaving this red and white tape in such an incredible image!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The light and mood you have captured are awesome Jaap, and just as your title suggest, it is indeed a Dutch painting you have created out of these icy pixels. I had a look at your photo yesterday night and I didn't want to blast you with this ribbon detail, pretending I didn't see it.
But you are one of the top landscapers here Jaap, members look at your work as an inspiration and the standards are necessarely higher when it comes to your work. You just can't afford to overlook such a detail!
Man, if I was rich enough, I would fly to Netherlands just to do such an INCREDIBLE scene, if only I was sure to find every quality YOU were able to include in your shot. This is probably one of the 100 best images ever published on this site, it's artistic but also technically impeccable.
I am sure that without that &*@#! tape, your photo would be a favorite of 100+ persons!!!!!!
I'm really impressed by this photo Jaap, as I know I would never be able to achieve this quality, the elevated point of view, the splendid depth, the subdued colours, the perfect timming where the grass is slightly covered with frost and where the light is sooooooo low, offering this improbable ambiance, closer to a painting than an actual photo.
This photo of yours is the one that strikes me the most, the one that I would show to people if I would like to convince them about your talent.
It is a masterpiece Jaap, and I am sure that Cuyp or Wouwerman would never have incorporated a red and white tape, although there was not such a thing in those years... :-P)
Yes, it's a Dutch painting, but make sure to erase that ugly thing that doesn't belong there. It's like the most beautiful woman in the world with a tatoo on her forehead.
My humble respect,
Andre

Hmmm...Looks like a photo belonging to the days before the collapse of TE. Look at the members who were once in the chorus of admirers, many of them are gone now...
I loved the image so much that i wouldn't even notice the red/white band, but after reading "the best critique you have ever received in 6 years on TE", i cannot take my eyes off it. Indeed, you should have cloned it out.
Best regards,
Deniz

Hello Jaap,
looking into your gallery I have found this great picture, which is really like a typical northern europe painting. If one forgets for a moment the red and white sign of modern life if foreground (and probably the modern dresses) it is really a scene which coulb be from an old paint.
