Photographer’s Note
I’m interrupting my USA travelogue to post a topical image taken closer to home. From the different people who have asked me about the snow in the UK it must be world news. We are in the grip of a weather system from Siberia, and although we are known as a wet, cold country it doesn’t often snow. That means the authorities don’t invest in the efficient snow clearing equipment used by countries used to snow, and drivers don’t have snow tyres or chains. This means when we do have a lot of snow, the country comes to a virtual standstill.
Actually on the Northeast coast where I live there has been a lot less snow than elsewhere and what has fallen has soon thawed, although today's offering seems to be hanging around! However on the North Yorkshire Moors not many miles away there is plenty. We went to take some photos. This one is of Danby Dale taken from the top of the road into Botton Village, which is a community for people with learning disabilities, and is about 7 or 8 miles from home.
Just for fun, in the WS is a snap Rob took while I was knee deep in snow.

Hello Kath,
Un paysage enneigé qui est rempli de détail. J'aime beaucoup les lignes qui forment de très bons points d'intérêt dans cette image. On a l'impression d'être devant un grand échiquier.
Bien vu !

Hello Kath!
What a beautiful photograph!
I love all the patterns created on the ground and you have captured them so nicely and well! Not common too much snow in England, is it? Weather's stuff! I really like this one! TFS - Congratulations! Warmest regards, Neyvan

Hi Kath... We werent used anymore to the winter as they used to be, almost here in Madrid, but this year coldness has comeback, and indeed this photo gives a good perspective of it. I love the slightly cold-blue color of the sky. It gives more strenght to the subject of the phtoo.

Wow, what a wonderful white view, Kath. I was just speaking with Ana at breakfast about snow in Europe and we read in a magazine that it didn't snow in London for the last 18years which surprised me a lot since I thought it was a common thing every year. I can imagine how dificult it is to take photos to snow when we are almost obcessed with overexposed whites ;-) I have to say that this looks just perfect to my eyes, the shadow and light on the right corner very well balanced. The WS looks even better as a complementar view for fun.

Hello Kath,
Good capture of this snowy landscape. I like the field patterns broken up by the drystone walls. Exposure looks just about right to me. The snow in the UK has certainly been featured on the news over here. None were we are but it has been quite bad in the North of France.

Hi Kath,
Congratulations for getting the magical white powder too, last night got 15cms here and it's still falling :-)
You had a good overlooking pov there, and the contrasts show well the land ownership with small roads between the lots.

Good morning Kath,
I told you before, don't give me the credits, it's your picture and your own work in creating this one. The soft blue colour cast is gone now and brings in a much more brighter white and better contrast in the far background. How the image is build is is very nice with those rocks in front, i'll bet this place must also look great in summer.
So far not a single snow drop here....but at least the sun is shining today ;-)
Have a nice day,

Hello Kath,
I like these patterns formed by the snow covered fields surrounded by trees or stone walls. Very nice graphical result.
It's always surprising and funny how people from more southern countries believe that in countries more northern there would be snow every winter.

Hi Kath. Looking at this image, so calm, peaceful and beautiful, one could be forgiven in disbelieving the news of chaos coming from England. Hello Kath! This is a fantastic winter picture, nothing to be worried about, this looks just wonderful. I really love the little squares of the fields and how we can see the stone fencing around making lovely patterns. Yeah snow in England, this IS special, it snows right now where I live, big wet snow flakes, the ones that make perfect snow in the mountains, ideal for skiing, preparing for excellent conditions. Happy Sunday ... Barbara.

Hi Kath,
What a nice little white valley! I was under the impression that it did snow quite a bit in the UK - probably from seeing too many movies. That's global warming for you, then.
I think the post processing turned out well, perhaps a little of the dreaded blue tinge in the lower right. I just let my D300 take charge and shoot in JPG, anyway and it does really well with difficult situations such as that. I like the composition, too, it makes me want to drive down into the center of the valley to explore.
Have fun in the snow!

Hello Kath,
Your photo is interesting because shows us this sight of the english landscape, almost always with a few beautiful green tones, totally covered by the snow.
The United Kingdom is suffering a bad weather, and you have taken advantage of the opportune moment when it has stopped snowing to go out to take these photos.
I like the graphism of the fields that look like a patchwork on the landscape.
And also I like much the WS, where we can see how deep was the layer of snow.
Best wishes,

Hi Kath
This a beautiful shot of the dale with all of its stone fences and farm holdings. I usually find that if the snow dominates the scene as in this shot then I open up 1 stop and sometimes 1.5 - 2 stops if it is a bright sunny day to keep the snow white. Of course you can accomplish this in the RAW conversion.

Hello Kath,
Your capture shows really different snowy landscape of England's instead of famous green. I like splendid textures created by snow and perfectly build point of view while natural border between fields and silhouettes of trees eye catching. Low angled lights with long shadows are wonderful on fields. Excellent clarity and sharpness. Congratulations. Have a nice new week.

Hi Kath,
I think that this snow would have been the welcome at the time of Christmas !!! On Versailles, yesterday, snow fell abundantly creating a temporary paralysis in the city and what a sludge !!! Today that melts and fall from the roofs.
A very beautiful catch of general sight on this unit of fields snow-covered. Very good management of the light. Sympathetic the photograph in WS and one realizes well thickness of the snow-covered layer, impressive.

Kath,
Wow, this must be global warming HaHa! We just went through 5 straight days of below freezing nights in Florida, but we didn't get any snow.
Your composition is great using the lines and angles created by the fences to create a patchwork look to the landscape. Your light management is very good bringing our nice details without overexposing the snow.
This is a great photo.

Hi Kath
I still remember in winter 1977/78 seeing the lake in Hyde Park totally frozen over and having so much snow at Warwick castle. But it's true when people aren't used to it and there isn't the right snowclearing material, it can create caos. Here it snowed all last night and today and I can see from my balcony that the roads are clear. It certainly is unusual to see this region covered in so much snow. The composition with the strong cliff in the foreground works well. It's a little harsh but then I find it hard too to get the right pp with such photos.

Hi, Kath -
One trick I've been told about snow (and which I never remember, but on the other hand we don't get snow here in San Francisco), is that you should start by overexposing: EV +1 or +1.3. Otherwise the meter tries to convert the white snow to 18% gray, and you get a bluish cast. Then you check your histogram and adjust. Try it and let me know.
We have been hearing about the problems with the weather, but mostly in London. It was one thing when the buses shut down, but the Underground, too? I hope you're coping all right up in the North Country.
Best,
Dan

Hi, Kath.
I don't know anything about shooting snow, the couple times we got some of that stuff here in Amsterdam I took a couple pictures which no doubt qualify as the absolute worst in photographic snow history... LOL! But I really like what I see here. The locations is wonderful and there's a very natural feel to the whole view in terms of lighting, with outstanding overall contrast. Nothing but praise! Having said that : I'm fully aware of the problems snowfall can cause in a country that doesn't usually get a lot of it, so... I hope things are getting better for y'all. I personally like snow for three minutes, after which I start losing my temper...
Have a nice evening, see ya soon.

Hola Kath.
We are able to see the BBC TV news in Dominican Republic, very scary news about the heavy snow fallen across large parts of the UK, disrupting travel and closing thousands of schools. It could cost UK economy £1 billion, that's isn't very good in this moment of global economy problems.
Your shot is a good example of what is happening and at the same time is a very good winter scene captured from a good high POV.
I don't think you did a good favor to Henk, maybe right now he is receiving hundreds of pictures from TE members to be blessed....LOL
Nice shot taken to you by Rob.

Hi Kath,
Isn't that Norway? :D
I already knew that snow isn't common in England, but I never thought it was so rare. It's a magnificent view over that wide valley with the gentle slopes divided in white squares. You chose a nice FG, without which the image risk being a little boring.
If you are affected by the general "OE phobia" that "plagues" most of TE'ers, it must have been a nightmare to photograph snow. :D
I read yesterday about your discussions with Henk...
I don't know if you spent much time with PP or if you did a lot of bracketing when shooting, but the result is flawless to my eyes. Of course there is a very slight blue cast, but it would look unnatural if there wasn't. I also guess that being sunny like it looks it was, maybe the snow on the distance was much brighter, but I found that you chose an excellent compromise between burnt out and "pale/too subdued" appearance.
I like the WS very much!
Regards, José.

It's not so common to see such an image from England. The landscape which would have been otherwise a patchwork of green & yellow is fully covered with snow...the elevated aisles separating the fields make wonderful patterns. Fine exposure here, since I think it's not so easy with the white of the snow. Liked the WS as well...what were you upto...looking for this POV or 'playing' in this nature's surprise act? Fine work!

The rock promontory in the f/g is an interesting introduction with its rugged texture and fine covering of snow.
The valley looks so picturesque with its white blanket cover, interupted by the squared pattern of drystone walls. The low houses appear to snuggle into the landscape for shelter.
