Photographer’s Note
A barn near Lexington, New York. This type of enormous barn is typical of the area. The lower level, entered on the sides, is for the cows, and the upper part, entered by way of a built-up driveway as you see here, is for the hay and the farm machinery. Farming is in decline in this area; it's a hard life, and the young people don't want to do it anymore. Competition from large agribusiness operations makes a small conventional farm uneconomical as well, unless they specialize in organic farming. This barn has a good roof, so it is not in danger, but all around the area there are barns in disrepair or collapse.
