[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The next in my 1970s series of photos from Papua New Guinea.
Finschhafen east of Lae and was the site of the first attempt (1885) by Germany to set up a settlement in new Guinea. It was abandoned by 1892.
By the 1970s Finschhafen was a small town with plenty of interest along the coast. Even then it was noted that there were terraced areas along the coast. Just recently it was in the media that these terraces were actually the site of ancient agriculture and now being thoroughly researched.
When I visited the area we went out to a area along the coast to the north of Finschhafen and this suspension bridge across a river. It was very shaky but in a beautiful setting. Note the beautiful short shorts and long socks of the 70s! (The ones on the bridge were Australians doing national service).
Scanned from a slide.
