Photographer’s Note
Kampung Semban, a village of not more than 30 houses and less than 300 population, in the 3000ft jungles of Borneo. Playing football without proper stud shoes but with a big dream like Pele. These kids remind me of Brazilian boys playing football on TV commercial ads, those sponsored by Adidas. The strike to goal by every kick, the pose, the style. I wonder, they watched a lot of television and tapes of football?
This boy went next day 1hr trekk with me to fishing at waterfall [they tell us 8-10 pounder fresh water fish], but here he was practising his football passing skill. He wore the kampong adidas shoes that I also used to trek the jungles, as well as twice to summit of Mt Kinabalu at 4095m. RM5.99 a pair. You tell me, would you buy them? As you will see in later posts, the football pitch is a central focus of the village. The moment we entered the village, the football field is so prominent, because on this afternoon, the villagers all came to celebrate Gawai here in football matches, women final, men final, girls final, boys final. There was a team named H1N1 :) and this village is out of this world, 5 hrs trekking in rainforest jungle at 13km from nearest trading post.
The women's teams? Mostly married women but you have to see this body physical fitness, they can trek the jungle at least 20% less time than mine. One of the boys was chosen to play under-12 National football games this week. I am impressed with the football spirit in this village, it is a dream for many young ones here. This pose tells me he is very good. I watched him play during every break of the contests. This is one of 20 prints that I will send to the village tomorrow for their keeping.
p/s Alfred complained about quality of his kit lens, 50mm standard lens, and sigma 50-500mm lens. Here is my shot of max FL500mm which I have also used for portraits with satisfactory results.

Hello Bill,
A beautiful shot of the boy in full action.
Excellent sharpness. The shadow on the light brown soil adds to the composition.
What I like about football is that this sport bridges all peoples and cultures like no other one.

Greatly executed and perfectly presented.

Hi Bill, good action shot, well timed to give a dynamic image in which we can imagine how the action proceeds. I wonder about the vignetting (PP?) which has left his face a bit dark. I think I would have liked a bit of motion blur too, to enhance the feeling of movement. Is that Alfred's 50-500 or another one - in anycase you seem to get a good image from it. cheers, Steve

Hey Bill, what a great shot - and a left-footer aswell! This is a beautiful action shot, made even better by the fact that the little fella's playing on sand in what looks like a game of "street" football. Wonderful, it's what I go to this site to see, TFS, Lisa.

Hello Bill, There is no other way to this village but trek for 5 hours, correct? what about bike? out of the question I suppose. I'm only thinking like this because I would love to travel to these placed with you but 5hrs not sure. Anyway a good action shot & by his style & hard work combined with commitment who knows maybe the opportunity will come his way. Nothing wrong with your lens, excellent clarity & colour. Loved your note, you have admiration for these people that is clearly conveyed in your notes. Well done.
Thanks

Hi Bill,
The vignette created in this shot making it look like lomography. I like the clarity, details and the warm color in the frame. The timing of the capture can't be more perfect than this.
A star to be and the field without grass reminded me that I'll have to mow the field for my kampong kids tomorrow.
TFS and best regards,

Hi Bill,
I am not a fan of football, which is something that makes me an eccentric person in my own country where the news of the new girlfriend of Cristiano Ronaldo is more important than everything else. Even so, this little boy surely looks promising and you captured superbly his amazing "choreography", freezing his motion in the air, just about to kick the ball. I like your "cheat" of darkening the outer areas of the image, simulating a focus of light on the young player.
PS: I am very sad that you stopped posting, but I understand your reasons. I hope you find a likeable space to keep up with your online photo activity and, if you don't, you have no problems of any kind in returning.
PPS: I really don't know where to find you. Are you in Facebook or Flickr?
